Binocular vision assessment
A number of children and adults develop binocular vision co-ordination problems at various times during their lives. Binocular instability can be due to problems such as pathology in adults, normal physical development in children, and uncorrected refractive errors in young children. These problems can cause double vision, headaches, eyestrain, and amblyopia, or squint.
We can effectively screen for binocular abnormalities during an eye examination, and frequently bring patients back for further investigation via a binocular vision assessment. These binocular vision abnormalities are managed in various ways, such as spectacles, prism relief, eye exercises, and patching.
We also see a number of children who are having problems with their reading development, and screen them for “Pattern Glare Syndrome”, or “Mears-Irlen Syndrome”. A large number of dyslexic people have Pattern Glare Syndrome. The small number that fail our screening are prescribed coloured overlays to help them read at school or work, and are also prescribed precision tinted lenses such as Chromagen if a profound & sustained improvement in their reading performance is noted.
