Macula function assessment

A growing number of our patients are developing macula degeneration, due to the demographic shift in our patient base.

Referral to the local Ophthalmology department can be traumatic, and inconvenient for family & carers. A large number of patients prefer us to monitor this condition & manage their visual problems, rather than have regular trips to the hospital.

In the early stages of the disease, patients require counselling, and advice on simple strategies e.g. to increase task illumination, and magnification. We provide counselling sessions to our patients with advice on lighting, diet, dietary supplements, environmental factors, risk factors (e.g. smoking), photodynamic therapy & visual prognosis. This information is backed up by patient literature. We also assess visual performance using visual acuity, central visual field performance, & contrast sensitivity. Dilated indirect ophthalmoscopy is done on a regular basis to watch for signs of wet ARMD, and macular haemorrhage.

Some patients go on to need low vision aids to help them to see specific tasks. A low vision aid service is also provided by the practice.
