Red eye assessment
We regularly encounter patients in practice who present with ocular hyperaemia (red eye), discomfort, and discharge. Most are managed with remedial eyelid hygiene, ocular lubricants, and over the counter remedies. We also prescribe eyedrops & ointments regularly via signed orders for patients who are not entitled to exemption from NHS medication charges.
The majority of red eye problems we see are not infections, but allergic / seasonal conjunctivitis, and do not benefit from anti-biotic medication.
We endeavour to see red eye investigation patients within an hour of arrival at the practice, in case the condition needs urgent intervention. A short private 10 to 20 minute appointment is usually sufficient for these patients. The examination is purely of the external eye, and does not include a full eye examination, or refraction.
