Diabetic eye assessment

We perform a large number of retinal examinations with pupil dilation & photography privately to many of our diabetic patients, as an add-on to their basic NHS sight test.

Our Canon CR DGi digital retinal camera exceeds the recommended resolution for diabetic eye screening.

Those patients registered to attend North Tyneside's or Newcastle General hospital’s diabetic eye screening program annually do not normally require further pupil dilation by an Optometrist at their sight test appointment, unless there are signs of other eye disease such as glaucoma or cataract. Despite receiving hospital eye check ups for diabetes realted eye disease, diabetic patients still need regular "Opticians" sight tests, as changes to the glasses prescription can be caused by poor glucose control, and there is also an increased incidence of cataract in diabetes.

The NHS sight test and retinopathy screening services are quite separate and do not serve the same purpose. Make sure you still have an annual sight test in addition to your diabetic eye screening tests.
