Quick thinking optician saves Molly from a possible stroke

Molly Mellor wonders if she’d be here today if it wasn’t for the quick thinking of her optician.
Molly, who’s from North Tyneside, is a lively, energetic lady in her early 60s who keeps fit with regular workouts in the gym and by gardening.
She’d been having her eyes tested regularly at Querido and Davidson for 15 years and had never encountered a problem until one day she suddenly experienced a loss of vision in her left eye. This was transient and vision returned within minutes but the incident was alarming. The next day was a Sunday and Molly was busy gardening when the same thing happened again twice.
Worried now, first thing on Monday morning, Molly phoned John Davidson, her optician at Querido & Davidson and explained her symptoms. Because John had seen Molly regularly over the years and was familiar with her eyes, from the symptoms described over the phone, he straight away suspected "Amaurosis Fugax” – a condition often associated with a potential stroke, which needs immediate attention.
John called Molly’s GP straight away and also made an appointment for her at the RVI where she was seen that day. She was referred to the Stroke Clinic where she underwent a series of tests and was given cholesterol reducing drugs and a blood thinning drug to reduce the likelihood of her suffering a stroke.
Two months later, Molly’s been given the all-clear from the RVI, but still has to take her medication or she could be in the danger zone again.
Molly’s consultant at the RVI praised her "quick thinking optician” and Molly herself says: "As my story demonstrates, it certainly pays to have a regular optician who knows the history of your eye health. I might not have been here today, if it hadn’t been for John Davidson.”
John Davidson says: "We’re very pleased that we were able to identify Molly’s likely condition and take the appropriate action in time. Your eyes are a good indicator of your general health and Molly’s story is certainly a good example of that. We’re delighted that she’s made a full recovery and look forward to seeing her soon.”
